NBA Finals Odds 2024 – Analyzing the Top Championship Contenders

Boston Celtics – Clear Championship Favorites

The Boston Celtics have separated themselves from the rest of the pack this season, to become the clear cut favorites to win this year’s NBA Title.

As things stand right now, they sit at the top of the Eastern Conference with a league’s best 62-16 record.

Therefore, their NBA Finals odds vary around -200 (implied 66.7% probability) to win their 18th championship.

Strengths Fueling Celtics’ Title Hopes

Several factors make Boston’s roster uniquely dangerous come playoff time:

  • Offensive firepower – The Celtics rank 1st in offensive efficiency, pouring in a league-best 117.8 points per 100 possessions. Tatum and Brown are lethal scorers while Holiday, Brown, and Porzingis provide top-notch secondary options.
  • Defensive toughness – Boston locks down on D, rating 3rd overall in defensive efficiency. Holiday and Brown make life difficult on opposing ball-handlers while Kristaps protects the rim.
  • Coaching – Joe Mazzulla has seamlessly stepped up after firing Ime Udoka, utilizing the roster beautifully while earning players’ respect.
  • 3-point shooting – The team shoots an impressive 37% from deep despite high volume, thanks largely to the shooting of Tatum, Brown, Horford, White and bench sniper Sam Hauser.

Denver Nuggets Lurk as Defending Champs

While Boston garners much of the hype out East, the defending champion Denver Nuggets continue plugging along quietly out West.

The Nuggets sit second in the West at 54-24, led once again by their franchise big man and 2-time MVP Nikola Jokic.

The Nuggets are +350 betting underdogs to repeat as champions (implied 22.2% probability), thanks largely to Joker’s brilliance and the team’s continuity.

Denver brought back nine key rotation players from last year’s title team, developing strong chemistry together.

Nuggets Built for Playoff Success

While lacking the Celtics’ flashy stars and regular season consistency, Denver boasts several underrated qualities that translate beautifully to postseason play:

  • Continuity – 9 key players back from 2023 title team leads to seamless chemistry.
  • Star power – Jokic is simply unmatched in terms of interior scoring, rebounding, and playmaking.
  • Clutch ability – Jokic, Murray, and Porter all shine brightest in close late-game situations.
  • Resilient mentality – Denver has repeatedly overcome injuries and deficits thanks to next-man-up mentality.

Los Angeles Clippers Emerging as Sleepers

One intriguing dark horse squad on the NBA championship odds board is the Los Angeles Clippers at +900 (10% implied probability).

Written off by many fans after an injury-plagued 2022-23 campaign, the Clippers have rallied this season behind stunning trade acquisition James Harden.

Despite initial concerns over Harden’s declining athleticism and questions about his fit, the former MVP has rejuvenated LA’s offense since coming over from Philadelphia. His patient pick-and-roll mastery and elite step-back shooting have helped unlock efficient scoring for George and Leonard.

How Clippers Can Make Title Run

If fully healthy, the Clippers match up nicely with virtually any NBA Finals opponent thanks to their unique combination of skills:

  • Playmaking – Harden remains an elite distributor and scorer despite losing a step, while George and Leonard are also quality passers.
  • One-on-one scoring – All three stars can create instant offense in clutch situations.
  • Wing defense – George and Leonard provide versatility to counter opponents’ best scorers.
  • Proven coach – Ty Lue has successfully guided multiple stars to the Finals before.
  • Hungry veterans – Harden, George, and Westbrook are ultra motivated for first-ever title after years of playoff shortcomings.

Analyzing Additional Contenders

Milwaukee Bucks (+550 Odds)

Despite an early coaching change, the Bucks have rallied after trading for Damian Lillard to pair with Giannis Antetokounmpo. The combo has found its groove in the second half, helping Milwaukee post the NBA’s No. 5 offense behind elite shooting and rim attacking. The Bucks also allow the fewest points per game thanks to Giannis’ versatile defense and Brook Lopez’s rim protection. Playoff experience and the 1-2 punch of Giannis/Dame makes them dangerous.

Phoenix Suns (+1200 Odds)

Phoenix remains in the mix after coping with their injury crisis and picking up free agent Isaiah Thomas. With Booker, Durant, and Beal on the court their offense looks unstoppable, especially if you add the best 3-point-specialist this season named Grayson Allen!

What they lack is defensive stability and grit. With this slim of a lineup that they possess, it will be a real struggle to battle through the playoffs.

Oklahoma City Thunder (+1500 Odds)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s breakout into an MVP candidate has OKC surging up the West standings earlier than expected. The Thunder rank 9th offensively behind SGA’s smooth scoring and playmaking. With young studs like Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace and Jalen Williams contributing quality minutes, the Thunder’s future is sunny. While a title bid may come a year early, SGA’s brilliance gives them an outside shot.
