It takes an immense amount of effort and determination for a player to qualify into the NBA. It’s hard not to get overlooked when competing against other individuals, who have the same goal in mind. But what makes the players stand out it’s the self-confidence and extreme drive, which can be almost considered an obsession.

Malachi Flynn had to learn how to attract attention from a young age, as he was the youngest of seven children. His future career didn’t look promising, because he was only 5 feet 2 inches tall at the start of high school, which is a normal height for a teenager but by the rough standards of basketball, he was simply short. He grew four inches as a sophomore before he finally reached his current height of 6 feet 1 inch.

The pressure was on from the beginning, as coach Ernie Kent had great expectations when recruiting Flynn. As a Washington Cougar, Flynn scored 27 points in a win against Utah Valley. His sophomore year he finished with an average of 15.8 points and 4.3 assists per game, which can be considered his breakout game.

Flynn scored his first 20 points against Saint Mary’s and led the team to the championship game win against San Diego State with 24 points scored. He reached double figures in scoring 22 times and ranked ninth in a free throw percentage with .810. While playing for Washington State he made his only career double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.

In May 2018 it was announced that Flynn will transfer to San Diego State. As before, he was anticipated to score for the team and he didn’t fail. In February of 2020, he scored a career-high 36 points in a win over Nevada. He won the Mountain West Player of the Year and Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year awards. In his senior season, he averaged 17.6 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game and became Consensus second-team All-American. In 2020 it was time to leave San Diego State and try out for the NBA.

In 2020 Flynn made himself eligible for the NBA draft. He was a 29th overall, a first-round pick for the Toronto Raptors. He debuted on the NBA court by playing one minute against the New Orleans Pelicans. Later, he was given more opportunities and in January of 2021, he scored 12 points, five rebounds, and 2 assists in only 17 minutes he played. For a short time, he was relegated to Toronto’s NBA G League affiliate but played for the Raptors 905 only for two weeks.

On April 10, 2021, Flynn posted 20 points with 11 assists and two rebounds in a 135–115 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. On April 14, 2021, in a 108–103 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, Flynn finished with career-high 22 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. For his achievements, Flynn was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for April 2021.

Conclusion

Flynn is a valuable player for the Raptors. His road has just begun and despite him sitting out the 2021-22 season opener, we hope to see more of Flynn. He has a huge potential and it would be a shame to waste it as he probably hasn’t reached his career highs yet. With the right guidance, he could accomplish greatness.
