DJ Augustin – Houston Rockets & Career

Some of the players in the league fly from flower to flower, not quite sure where they can excel the most. Such players are also necessary for the NBA because they make a vital part of the bench or can be used as energy players where the main squad needs to rest. No matter if this is the first team or the fourth team they play for, they give all they’ve got to help them win.

This kind of player is Darryl Gerrard Augustin, DJ for short. As of the start of 2021-22, he is sitting with a 93.3 free throw percentage and a 38.6 field-goal percentage when it comes to stats. He is renowned for his ability to position himself for a three-pointer which is an essential skill in today’s games. His basketball career is still evolving and it’s quite an interesting process to watch.

DJ Augustin – Early Life

Darryl Gerard Augustin Jr was born in the mystical city of New Orleans in Louisiana on November 10, 1987. His family suffered from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and had to move. They chose Texas, where Darryl played for Hightower High School in Missouri City. Earlier, he was a part of the Brother Martin High School team in New Orleans and he helped them to two state championships.

DJ Augustin – College Career

Augustin chose the University of Texas and joined the Longhorns along with seven other freshmen. As a Texas Longhorn basketball player, he started all of the 35 games in freshman year and averaged over 14 points per game. He could participate in the NBA draft 2007 along with Kevin Durant but he figured that he still needs the practice he passed the first round.

DJ stayed in school for his sophomore year and worked hard on the court and outside of it. He also was doing quite well academically and managed to have a 4.0 GPA which is uncommon amongst the NBA players. As for his game, he won the Bob Cousy Award for the best point guard in 2008 and finally felt good enough to make himself eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft.

DJ Augustin – Charlotte Bobcats

Augustin was drafted ninth overall by Charlotte Bobcats. He debuted on October 30th, 2008, with 12 points and two assists. He was signed under a rookie scale contract that helped to earn him more money the longer he played for his first team. The termination came in 2012, before the start of the regular season when DJ became a restricted free agent, but the offer was withdrawn. After that, he joined numerous teams, looking for his place in the NBA.

DJ Augustin – On a Lookout for a Point Guard

DJ was an unrestricted free agent for only a day. Augustin signed with the Indiana Pacers but he didn’t stay with them for long. After that, he joined the Toronto Raptors in 2013. He appeared only in 10 games and averaged 2.1 points and 1 assist per game in 8.2 minutes. It was clear they weren’t a right fit for each other.

The next team he joined was the dying franchise, Chicago Bulls. He helped his team to win against the Boston Celtics while scoring 33 points. The Bulls were changing the players constantly at that time, so it’s not surprising that Augustin started the next season with a different team. He was given the opportunity to start the game for the Detroit Pistons and scored 35 points while wearing blue and red.

DJ Augustin – A Start of a New Chapter

2015 meant a new team for DJ, as he was traded to Oklahoma City Thunder and joined his former college teammate, Kevin Durant. In his debut, he recorded 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 10 assists per game. This performance wasn’t enough as he was traded once again, this time to the Denver Nuggets.
