How Teams Qualify for March Madness
There are over 350 Division I men’s and women’s college basketball teams, but only 68 men’s teams and 64 women’s teams receive invites to March Madness each year.
An NCAA selection committee chooses the qualifying teams in a process called “Selection Sunday,” which takes place on the Sunday before the tournament begins.
Thirty-two teams automatically qualify by winning their conference tournaments. The committee then selects 36 at-large teams for the men’s tournament and 32 for the women’s tournament based on factors like overall record, ranking in national polls, wins against quality opponents, and more.
Teams on the bubble that narrowly miss out on invites can play in secondary tournaments like the NIT.

The Selection Committee Process
Ten-member selection committees comprised of athletic directors and conference commissioners meet in person to evaluate potential tournament teams.
Using selection criteria like poll rankings and NET scores, members submit lists of at-large teams that should unquestionably make the field. Any team listed with eight members earns a bid.
How Teams Are Seeded
Once chosen, teams are seeded from 1 to 16 in each of four regions: East, West, South, and Midwest. The higher the seed – with #1 being the highest – generally indicates a stronger team.
The best teams get preferential geographic placement for the first two rounds.
Pods and Site Locations
Teams are assigned to one of eight regional first/second-round sites in pods of four teams each.
The top four teams in each region go to the most geographically compatible site. Regional sites ensure teams play closer to home early on.
In later rounds, the Sweet Sixteen takes place at neutral regional sites.
The Final Four is a new venue each year, typically a major city capable of hosting huge crowds.

March Madness Bracket Contests
A big part of the March Madness tradition involves fans predicting winners in advance via bracket contests.
Brackets allow fans to guess each game through the finals. While no bracket has ever predicted the tournament perfectly, millions enjoy testing their prognostication skills against friends or coworkers for fun or prize money.
The Thrill and Agony of Bracket Games
Part of what makes March Madness brackets so popular is the sheer unlikelihood of predicting them accurately.
Upsets are common, lending an air of delicious unpredictability. Even expert analysts rarely do well-forecasting brackets due to the randomizing play-in format.
That said, the odds of picking a perfect bracket are infinitesimally small, estimated at 1 in 9.2 quintillion.
So while the ultimate prize remains elusive, March Madness pools still present fun opportunities to compete against peers and revel in unexpected outcomes.

How March Madness Tournament Play Works
March Madness takes place over three exhilarating weeks each spring. Games tip off in mid-March with the First Four play-in round for lower-seeded men’s teams. Then the full tournaments launch.
Single-Elimination Format
Both Division I tournaments utilize a single-elimination format spanning multiple elimination rounds.
Lose once and your national title hopes perish. Survive and advance to play again.
This high-stakes win-or-go-home structure makes March Madness so intensely gripping for players and fans alike.
The Path to the Finals
Here is the gauntlet facing tournament hopefuls:
- Round of 64: The field narrows from 64 or 68 to the Sweet Sixteen over the first weekend.
- Sweet Sixteen: Regional play reduces the field to the Elite Eight after week two.
- Elite Eight: Just four Final Four teams remain after this round.
- Final Four: Semi-final winners play for their championship.
Surviving teams must win six straight playoff games to earn the celebrated honor of National Champions.
